The Cressy Longford Irrigation Scheme was developed in the early 1970s to deliver high-surety irrigation water to the central north areas of Cressy, Longford, Toiberry, Bishopsbourne and Carrick. An area of approximately 10,000 hectares in the Macquarie sub-catchment benefits from water sourced from Hydro Tasmania’s Poatina tailrace canal.
The region’s principal primary production focus is vegetables, poppies, grass seed, livestock finishing, dairy and grains. The Scheme is operated by Cressy Longford Irrigation Scheme Limited, administered by a locally appointed Board and managed by a Cressy-based team.
